At room temperature, it is a light yellow to reddish brown transparent liquid with an ammonia smell. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in polar organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, and ketone, and has good compatibility with polyether and polyester polyols. The color will darken after long-term exposure to air. Diethyltoluenediamine is flammable and highly corrosive. Contact with skin and eyes can cause irritation and severe burns. It is harmful if taken by mistake. Specific toxicity data is lacking. Its toxicity can be referred to that of toluenediamine.

Application Areas

Diethyltoluenediamine is used as a chain extender for reaction injection molding polyurethane, and a curing agent for polyurethane coatings, epoxy resins, and alkyd resins. It is an intermediate for pesticides and dyes, and an antioxidant for plastics, rubbers, and oils.
Diethyltoluenediamine is an aromatic diamine curing agent for polyurethane elastomers and epoxy resins. It is used for casting, coatings, and adhesives. It is also a chain extender for polyurethane and polyurea elastomers. It reacts quickly with polyurethane prepolymers and is mainly used in reaction casting polyurethane systems and spray polyurethane (urea) elastic coating systems. It has the advantages of fast reaction speed, short demoulding time, high initial strength, and hydrolysis resistance and heat resistance of the product. In addition, this product can also be used as an antioxidant for elastomers, lubricants, and industrial greases, as well as a chemical synthesis intermediate.
