It is a white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in water and acidic when dissolved. Adipic acid, a building block of numerous chemical products, is by far the most important aliphatic dicarboxylic acid in industrial production. Approximately 3 million tons of adipic acid are used annually worldwide as a monomer in the synthesis of nylon-66. Adipic acid is also used in the synthesis of polyesters, polyurethanes, lubricants, plasticizers, and as a gelling agent in food flavorings.
