Formic acid, with the chemical formula of HCOOH or CH2O2, is a weak electrolyte and the simplest fatty acid. It is a colorless, transparent, fuming liquid with a strong pungent odor. Contact with the skin will cause blistering. It is usually found in the secretions of bees, some ants and caterpillars, so it is also called "formic acid".

Formic acid is a weak electrolyte. Its aqueous solution is weakly acidic and has a certain degree of corrosiveness. Since its molecular structure does not contain alkyl groups, its acidity ranks first among non-substituted fatty monobasic acids. Formic acid is also reducing and can be oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. It can also undergo esterification, amidation, addition, neutralization, dehydration and other reactions.

The industrial production of formic acid includes sodium formate, methyl formate, formamide and butane liquid phase oxidation methods. In the laboratory, it can be produced by decomposition of oxalic acid (oxalic acid) or hydrolysis of nitriles.

Application

Formic acid is one of the basic organic chemical raw materials and is widely used in industries such as pesticides, leather, dyes, medicines and rubber. Formic acid can be directly used in fabric processing, tanning, textile printing and dyeing, and storage of green fodder. It can also be used as a metal surface treatment agent, rubber additive and industrial solvent. In organic synthesis, it is used to synthesize various formate esters, acridine dyes and formamide series pharmaceutical intermediates. The specific classification is as follows:
1. Pharmaceutical industry: It can be used for the processing of caffeine, analgin, aminopyrine, aminophylline, theobromine borneol, vitamin B1, metronidazole, and mebendazole.
2. Pesticide industry: It can be used for the processing of triadimefon, triadimefon, tricyclazole, triaminoazole, triazophos, paclobutrazol, uniclobutrazol, dicofol, and trichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane.
3. Chemical industry: It is used to manufacture various formates, formamide, pentaerythritol, neopentyl glycol, epoxy soybean oil, epoxy soybean oil octyl ester, pivaloyl chloride, paint strippers, and phenolic resin raw materials.
4. Leather industry: used as leather tanning agent, deashing agent and neutralizing agent.
5. Rubber industry: used for processing natural rubber coagulant and manufacturing rubber antioxidant.
