Tetrachloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C2Cl4 and is a colorless liquid.
Tetrachloroethylene is insoluble in sugar, glycerol and protein, slightly soluble in water (0.015 at 25°C), and miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene and chlorine organic solvents. It does not hydrolyze. In the absence of air, moisture and catalyst, it is still very stable even when heated to 500°C.

Application

Perchloroethylene is mainly used as an organic solvent and dry cleaning agent. It can also be used as a solvent for adhesives, a degreasing solvent for metals, a drying agent, a paint stripper, an insect repellent, and a fat extractant; it can also be used in organic synthesis. Perchloroethylene has a good solubility for many inorganic and organic compounds, such as sulfur, iodine, mercuric chloride, aluminum chloride, fat, rubber, and resin. This solubility is widely used as a metal degreasing cleaning agent, a paint stripper, a dry cleaning agent, a rubber solvent, an ink solvent, a liquid soap, and a degreasing agent for high-grade fur and feathers; Perchloroethylene is also used as an insect repellent (hookworms and gingerworms); a textile processing finishing agent.
